The Importance of What We Leave Behind

by Michelle Shreeve on

"Everyone must leave something behind when he dies, my grandfather said. A child or a book or a painting or a house or a wall built or a pair of shoes made. Or a garden planted. Something your hand touched some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die, and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted, you're there." - Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451

Think back to when you were a child. Do you remember looking through your family closets or photo albums? Crossing paths with an old letter your grandfather wrote your grandmother while serving in the war? Seeing your father's old Mickey Mouse stuffed toy from when he was a child?

When thinking back to when you were a child, surely you start to smile when you remember going through old family treasures. They not only make you happy when you think about them, but they can also help comfort you in moments in your life of sadness or stress. Now that you're older, the cycle continues to where your children are starting to learn more about you and your family through the various treasures they are starting to discover.

Leaving treasures behind such as photographs or old recipes are connections that link family members from various generations together. Once one generation is gone, the next generation learns about them based on what was left behind. Drawings from children when they were little, newspaper articles about family members, old video tapes showcasing a birthday party or a wedding. Leaving treasures behind is important to leaving a legacy.

And that's why I'm so impressed with Reflekta. They are letting families leave digital treasures behind long after the photograph fades, the recipe ink can no longer be read, and the stuffed toy has seen its last thread. When the tangible treasures fade, the digital treasures can still remain through the use of Reflekta's impressive technology.

If you haven't had a chance to check Reflekta out yet, I highly recommend starting with getting to know Arthur or Virginia--two featured Reflektions on the homepage that you can have a conversation with today... literally...to experience yourself how important what we leave behind truly is.
